Fewer Asian-American roles on Rialto
Variety: The current theater season brought us not one but two plays -- "Chinglish" and "Outside People" -- about expats in China. I wonder if this lack of Asian representation is because directors are, for whatever reason, not casting Asian performers, or if it is at least in part due to a lack of Asian performers. The media stereotype of Asians as primarily into math and science and not the arts is true to some extent, where parents want their children to SUCCEED and be able to take care of them in their old age, and come from a culture where obedience to parental wishes is still heavily embedded over the individual's desires. This MAY result in fewer Asian's going into theatre compared to other minorities.
