The Top 50 TV Showrunners: The Women
Women and Hollywood: The Hollywood Reporter has compiled a list of the top 50 showrunners in comedy and drama. There are a total of 15 women on the list. 5 in comedy and 10 in dramas. Several women are responsible for more that one show including the female crew who run all the CSI’s; Shonda Rhimes; and Stephanie Savage (who has a couple of shows on the CW.)

Ok so I began reading this article with the intention of actually finding out what a showrunner is, because I had no idea. Well I read the article and didnt learn a thing about what they actually did. So I looked them up and they are essentially the executive producers of the TV show (not to be mistaken for runners who essentially get coffee, though they can be referred to as runners). However, the fact that there are only 15 women on this list of 50 is amazing. I understand that especially Hollywood is a boy's club, so those women must really be the best of the best. I hope that next year there can be even more women just to at least give the old guard of Hollywood something to reckon with.
At this point, I've read several articles about how there are few women in high positions in television. I thought that maybe the difference wasn't as huge as it was being blown up to be until I read this article. Those numbers are astounding. 15 out of the 50 show runners mentioned is just pitiful. The fact that the number of women in drama is almost double the amount of women in comedy is also shocking. I wonder if this list will have the same effect on others reading it and what can be done to solve this problem. I hope that this list is a wake-up call to others. Of the women listed, I had only heard of two. Maybe greater visibility of women in the industry would help. A greater focus on these (few) successful women in TV could kick start a bit of a change in the gender distribution.
