'La traviata' opens Pittsburgh Opera season, with Russian soprano Anna Samuil breaking hearts as Violetta

Post Gazette: It's been made into three ballets, 13 Broadway plays, 20 movies in different countries (including "Pretty Woman" with Julia Roberts and "Camille" with Greta Garbo), and even a critically acclaimed stage version in drag. But the most popular spinoff of the classic 1848 French novel, "La Dame Aux Camelias," has to be Giuseppi Verdi's opera "La traviata," and on Saturday the Pittsburgh Opera is opening its 73rd season with a luxuriant production starring Russian soprano Anna Samuil, tenor Giuseppe Varano and a gorgeously costumed cast.
