At 81, Paul Taylor still creating new modern-dance pieces

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Longevity can bring many rewards for artists and for the audiences who enjoy their work. Choreographer Paul Taylor, an iconic figure in modern dance, has just finished the first stage of a new work. At 81, he's created more than 150 pieces, a boon for dance fans everywhere. Taylor has won just about every award imaginable. His life is filled with the pleasure of working with the dancers of his company. That excitement is complemented by the relaxation of his country home. Pittsburgh Dance Council will present Paul Taylor Dance Company on Saturday night at the Byham Theater, Downtown.

I think it's awesome that Paul Taylor is still creating new and exciting pieces, despite his age he is still a force to be reckoned with. The beauty about art, I feel, is that no matter how old you are, you never lose your passion for it, and your wisdom and understanding of it only grows. Although one's body might not be as adept to moving and creating, your mind and capacity to be creative never dwindles. I think its lovely for Paul Taylor to still be choreographing, his upcoming dance piece (especially with the drunken men!) seems particularly interesting.

I hope that age will always be a number and nothing more because it shouldn't stop anyone from doing what they love. It certainly didn't stop Taylor and now the dance world will enjoy the new choreography that he puts together. It seems to be good for him on top of being good for the performers and the audience. If you keep doing what you love, it keeps you young, especially for a teacher.
To be honest, his age shouldn't even be a factor because he is famous and because he worked all his life dancing and being the best he can. There is nothing more depressing than keeping someone from their natural talent. If anything, the years of experience merely adds to the performance, he knows what he's doing. I think that we will see some truly remarkable upcoming work.

I love that Paul Taylor is still such an active artist, even at his old age. I think that this idea that we must retire once we get old is ridiculous, and obviously Paul Taylor agrees. Paul Taylor choreographs such interesting works, so it is such a blessing for the rest of the world that he is still working. I think that as you get older, you probably become a better artist because you have more life experience to pull from.

This is so inspiring. It is a great example of how art keeps the brain young as new ideas continue forming and developing, and how being tech-savy is not the only way to keep up with the times. It is also beautiful to see an example of a person who was going into a different art form originally but who could not stay away from something else that called to him. This is something I aspire to be in my old age: someone who keeps up with the times and can continue growing and changing, no matter my age. I would love to see this dance piece, I am so glad it is in Pittsburgh!

I agree with Sophia, Paul Taylor keeps doing art because it keeps him young and moving at heart. I hope he keeps creating dances and artwork no matter how old he gets and that goes for so many other artist as well. No one should ever stop improving upon their art just because they are getting older. I hope he never stops. I love his work and I really would love to see this performance and more in the future. Especially the dance that is like "Rashomon" it sounds intriguing and different.
