RAD proposed budget increases slightly

Post Gazette: The Allegheny Regional Asset District board released a proposed 2012 budget of $82.1 million today, 1.2 percent more than this year's spending plan. The preliminary budget will fund 88 local cultural and arts groups, three fewer than this year. The budget will fund major assets like the city and Allegheny County parks, Carnegie Library and museums, Phipps Conservatory and the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium, as well as a host of smaller organizations.

In a decade where all I ever hear about is how the national government is cutting budgets, it is nice to hear about who is making an effort to keep everything funded in our community. Maybe I am still bitter about the nagging from last weeks article, but I feel like more organizations should be doing this. In fact, I think that local theaters, or the cultural trust, should fund arts programs at the schools. All they would be doing is investing into the next generation of their own hires. Maybe these people already contribute and I am just ignorant to that, but food for thought..
