Intiman Theater Cancels Season

NYTimes.com: "The board of the financially embattled Intiman Theater in Seattle voted on Saturday to cancel the rest of the 2011 season and lay off the theater’s staff, said Susan Trapnell, a consultant that the board hired late last month to lead a financial turnaround.

When Intiman announced that they were going to emergency fundraise $1M by September to stay open I was already skeptical. You feel that people would have grasped the finance troubles sooner and they could have done some other strategic planning, or tried to scale back. Its great that they raised $450, 000, if only they realized sooner they would have had to cancel the season, but its good they know have more money. I feel sorry for the employes that were laid off and now have to find something, especially before the summer.

It's too bad that it came to this for Intiman, but the move certainly makes sense. Rather than continue on losing money for the rest of the season, they can wipe the slate clean, come up with a new plan of action, and restart next season fresh with a better sense of how they are going to survive. That must have been a tough choice for the management, but it is probably best for the long-term health of the organization.
