Alumnus returns to Pittsburgh to perform

The Tartan Online: "Dreams can become reality. For Carnegie Mellon alumnus Perry Sherman, his dream as a student was to be on Broadway after graduation. Today, he is living that dream: He is on his second Broadway production, a member of the first national touring company of Next to Normal, which is coming to the Benedum Center in Pittsburgh next week.

Bravo Tartan, another Pulitzer-worthy article. Gerry Kline? Don Watsburg? Barbara McKenzee? Jeez.

I never had the chance to meet Perry while he was a student, but he went on as Henry last night at Next to Normal and was great. It's really interesting to hear how different his preparations for Gabe and Henry are, considering he must be prepared to step into either role at a moment's notice. The only thing I'm confused by is his status as an "understudy" while Diana and Dan have "standby"s. Usually an understudy's in the show and is prepared to take over a lead, while a standby doesn't perform at all. Does this imply Perry sings backup vocals offstage or something when he's not on as Gabe or Henry?
