Disney to close Bob Zemeckis' digital film studio, laying off hundreds
Los Angeles Times: "In a cost-savings move, Walt Disney Studios is shutting down director and producer Robert Zemeckis' ImageMovers Digital studio in Marin County, which employs 450 people. Those employees will be phased out over the course of the year until the facility closes by January 2011."

It is a shame to hear that Disney is closing one of there animation studios. Disney was first known for there animation films and now that they are closing this studio. I feel it is a step back for Disney, the films that this studio did were so amazing. In my mind this is one of the studios that would have done more and more remarkable things in the animation world. I guess that Disney executives figure that they need to cut back. In the current economy this was the thing that they felt they must cut to continue in business.
I find it interesting that Disney is closing a studio that just recently produced a film that brought them a great deal of income. Though the article did not give us figures to account for overhead costs of the studio, we learned in Producing for TV and Film how only 2 out of 10 movies produced turn over a profit vs barely breaking even or possibly losing money.
Additionally, I think the field of motion capture has so much potential. It is a growing technology which just recently in Avatar, grew leaps and bounds. Incorporating an actors facial expressions now exists, and with a Disney Studio dedicated to this art form, I am surprised Disney would not want to have this studio work on that.
But then again, money is money, so I am sure if this studio was producing millions of dollars in profit a year, Disney would not be closing it. The economy is rough and everyone suffers.
