Runaway Production: Why I’m Filming in Bangkok
Big Hollywood: "I am sitting in my hotel room in Bangkok on a Sunday afternoon; taking a break from prepping a film that will star Djimon Hounsou and be directed by the Steven Spielberg of Thailand, Prachya Pinkaew. Prachya is famous for Om Bak, Chocolat and Tom Yung Goon, three of the highest grossing films in the history of the country. You may be wondering why I am in Thailand and not somewhere in the United States. Why am I in a country 9,000 miles away from home when I could be shooting this movie anywhere in America including Los Angeles."

This article goes on an interesting rant- and a rant it is. This author is obviously very affected by the issue of film making outside of the united states. I have to mostly agree with his view on unions and how they are hurting the film industry. I see this trend in union jobs in all industries- they are killing the flexibility of American companies to stay economically viable in our changing global economy. Its interesting, because if these companies can't exist and employ people, then why have a union in the first place. Film is one example where this is happening even more and more. As film moves off shores, the unions will rapidly begin loosing power, something they must prepare for now.
On another note, this article begins addressing the lowering rate of purchasing movies, but does not go into the causes such as internet distribution and piracy. There's another article about that issue still to be written.
