10 Free Project Management Applications

FreelanceFolder: "For many freelancers the project planning tasks that go along with freelancing may seem kind of overwhelming (especially if they’ve never done any project planning). Other freelancers may find that they need to provide the same kind of project plans to their clients that would have been required of them in the corporate world."

There is always a battle to find "the best" application to assist project managing. What I've found, at least in this business, is that I don't have a lot of time to review my efficiency in projects. While I'm working, I keep everything written down with me at all times, so that I can have it handy without needing a computer. Yes, applications and software can be helpful, but I would like to be able to decide for myself which projects need the most attention when, even though one may be due before another. I guess it could be helpful to use a program like this as a back up, and I think it depends upon how you work best, but I'm very hesitant to keep things digitally when I can keep things in hard copy. It's really a personal thing I suppose.

I love trying out new applications for management, and especially love when an entire list of suggestions are handed to me. The only problem is that I tend to find several of them that I enjoy using, and have a problem narrowing them down. The applications that I enjoy the most are ones that allow you to compile multiple pieces of information in one place.

While the only one of these that I have tried in OpenProj, and while programs like this are useful for most applications, there will always be things that each program does not do well. Thus, you will be doing things the project software was not meant to do and thus spending more time on it than if the software had not been used. Therefore, you must look at each program compared to the tasks you know you are going to have to do on a daily basis. The one that does those tasks the way you want them done, that is the program for you. I also think that if you are going to be doing this on a daily basis, you are working for a company who should be able to provide you with software that (although it might not be free) will do everything needed.
