The Music Lesson

Pittsburgh City Paper: "Bring extra hankies for South Park Theatre's production of The Music Lesson. It's a testament to local playwright Tammy Ryan that her 1999 drama still packs a wallop even with the occasional rough patches to be expected in community theater. And I'll tip my omnipresent hat to director Liam Macik for tackling the challenge of an intimate drama that demands so much from its players, especially the youngest ones."

Children on stage have been a more present topic of late. There are so many challenges inherent. From the limited hours, to the limited life experiences of the actors. Working with young people in any setting can be difficult but putting them onstage and telling them to listen can be extra difficult. I'm glad to see that this production was successful.

Working with children is always hard. However, I think its wonderful to see a kid respond when they are in an environment where they are encouraged to be great instead of cute. They try to live up to that and often deliver. As a camp counselor I've seen kids transform in the month that they're at camp and at showcase, they deliver a performance that they never expected they were capable of. I am really happy to see that the show went well and that the kids gave a good performance.
