Sheik breathes life into Broadway

The Denver Post: "'Spring Awakening,' a revolutionary musical written by Sheik and Steven Sater in response to the Columbine massacre, has galvanized young audiences like nothing since 'Rent.' Sheik not only earned two 2007 Tony Awards and a Grammy nomination, he now has more musicals in development, is back on tour promoting his 'White Limousine' CD and is forming a new band with touring mate David Poe."

This may sound harsh...but...Spring Awakening was not revolutionary.Broadway doesn't need more RENT "wannabe"s. Spring Awakening used the same aspects as RENT to "shock" audiences (using subject matter that doesn't cross generational barriers, rock music, concert style choreography etc.)Comparing it to RENT is a marketing gag gone too far.
As for the article, good for Duncan Sheik. However, its interesting that he came over to theater when after not being very sucessful in the music industry.

It is funny that Duncan Sheik has used Spring Awakening as publicity for his own personal career. Included with the soundtrack is bonus song performed by.. you guessed it.. Duncan Sheik. I'm with Jules here about the "revolutionary" nature of this musical. Sure it makes a pretty bold statement, but they didn't write the original story, and all of the music sounds like it arrived straight out of the 90s pop charts.
