Little Progress in Hollywood as Contract Expires

New York Times: "With the clock running out on the contract between Hollywood’s writers and producers Wednesday, negotiators made little progress toward a new deal, and both sides prepared for a strike that could begin as early as Friday."

The issue of new technologies in the entertainment industries is definitely affecting not just stage hands, but screen writers, directors, and probably soon the actors. These changes seem to mean higher costs of productions overall. It will be interesting to see what changes are made when all these contracts expire.

It seems to be the sad state of labor regulations in this country that contracts will always expire and people will continue to work 'playing nice' for a while, until another contract is drafted. The same holds true for the stagehands and NYC teachers union, and i'm sure dozens of others i just don't know. With the speed of beaurocracy and unions being almost a snail's pace, it always takes longer than it should to draft a new contract. But the stupid part... They have plenty of time to draft a new contract, its not like they dont know when its going to expire...

I would like to know what the writers who are opposed to the strike think, if they are out there. It must be hard to have to quit working over a fight you don't support.
