Podcast: Making TKTS Hip to Be Square

New York Times Blog: "When George M. Cohan wrote “Give My Regards to Broadway,” he never figured he would be gone this long. But his jaunty bronze figure still remains hidden behind a blue plywood construction fence in the heart of Times Square. The statue is accessible only to the pigeons that brazenly roost undisturbed on the songwriter’s bare head."

I think that this construction plan is such a great idea. Aside from the sleek and functional design gives a different type of architectual feel to the center of times square, giving an improved and accentuated home to the George M. Cohan is a nice historical initiative.

By making the TKTS experience more of a publicized and comfortable experience, theatre audiences will increase, as more people will be aware of the discounted tickets, many of whom would not pay for the full price seats, and dont have the patience to fight the gestapo on the current TKTS line.

seating? seriously? wow. i hang out down there quite a bit (well i guess not anymore, but previous to these last two months) and i can say that unless you get a table in a restaurant or lean on a fire hydrant there is nowhere to sit anywhere. im sold on the design, it looks very sleek and exciting, im just not entirely sold on the functionality. i do think it will encourage people who wouldnt normally go to the theatre to take a peek and get some cheap tickets. the unfortunate part about the tkts booths current location is that it's hidden unless you know where to look. on the other hand the fortunate thing about the current location is that its protected from rain, snow, sleet, hail, etc.

I'm also sure that the amount if people working on the Empire State building than on the TKTS booth. However, the slow construction is also an example of planning. For example keeping in mind the time it requires to construct something in Austria and then to have it shipped here.

I fully appreciate the TKTS booth seeing as how on my last trip to new york that's how my mom and I purchased all of our tickets.
