I think it is a good point that many Americans today find themselves unaccountable to disasters and misfortunes of those who are around us. It seems that even with the spread of communication, we have more introverted. That is not to say that there aren't philathropists and people doing good all the time, but as a country as a whole, we aren't too giving. A good example is the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and Rita and the genocide crisis in Darfur. I'm not saying there aren't many people who have aided all these causes, but on a national scale, as soon as issues stop hitting the headlines, we tend to forget about them and leave them to sort themselves out.
