Broadway Breakdown?
LiveDesign: "Will they or won’t they? After ten fruitless weeks of negotiations between Broadway producers and stagehands the shows will go on tonight but anything after that is in question. The two sides are in dispute over how many stagehands are necessary to work a show."

The negotiation tactic that the producers are using is really quite sneaky. They are turning the public opinion against local 1 which will add to their bargaining position. Saying that they don’t want a lockout but still refusing to come to an agreement puts local 1 in a tight position. They can either agree to undesired terms of their contract or strike until they get what they want. The problem with striking however is that it looks bad for them to shut down Broadway by striking, and public opinion will usually influence governmental intervention should it occur. If this happens it is all together likely that the government will force both sides into undesired positions which will make the next negotiations no better off.
