The Dilemma of Flame Retardants: Science, History and Politics
Arlene Blum, Ph.D., Biophysical Chemist
On behalf of Dr. Devra Davis, Director and Dr. Maryann Donovan, Scientific Director of the Center for Environmental Oncology of UPCI, I would like to personally invite you to attend a very exciting lecture entitled “The Dilemma of Flame Retardants: Science, History and Politics” presented by Arlene Blum, PhD. As a biophysical chemist, Dr. Blum worked with Dr. Bruce Ames on research in the 70’s that led to the banning of two cancer-causing flame retardants, tris (2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate and tris (1,3-dichloro-2propyl) phosphate that were widely used in children’s sleepwear at the time. This message is a timely one, however, as there is currently a PA State Bill pending that wants to make mandatory that these flame retardant chemicals be used in all bedding, mattresses and furniture in our state. Dr. Blum will be visiting the Center for Environmental Oncology on Thursday, April 5 2007, and her talk that day will be from 2 – 4 PM in the UPMC Cancer Pavilion, Herberman Auditorium, Room 202A (5150 Centre Avenue, Pittsburgh PA 15232). I do hope you will be able to join us on April 5. Please call {412-623-6922} (or email mcdermotts@upmc.edu) and confirm with Sharon McDermott, MFA, Associate Director of Outreach, Education and Public Policy at the Center for Environmental Oncology, if you will be able to attend.
