Pretty women play 'ugly' on Broadway
NY Daily News: "In all seriousness, casting pretty actresses to play drab characters always smacks of dishonesty. Until, and this is important, you consider that the vast majority of 'women don't see themselves as they really are.'"

Hmmm...that seems a very convienant answer. " we cast beautiful women as ugly because they just might feel ugly." Yes its true many people cant see themselves as they really are, but unless that is really part of the story and the character than it doesn't make sense. There are plenty of actors out there that I don't think they can't find a "plain jane" to play the part.
I think this article taps into something deeper than casting beautiful women as 'ugly' women on Broadway, which is the level of self-confidence that goes into your work. I feel that the issue of this article is being able to ACT ugly though you may not be ugly. It's very much like your confidence in doing something in the shop; if you know what you're doing it can come off in a completely different light if you don't say anything or are tentative about what you're doing.
This can be taken in another direction though too. Because if you are casting women in roles that are not flattering, it takes a lot for the actress to step back and comprehend that maybe most likely she is not that "ugly". They have to have a certain amount of confidence to handle that kind of emotional challenge.
