A season in hell

Time Out New York: "When Winter Miller was in eastern Chad near the Darfur region of Sudan in March of last year, she met a group of civilians who had captured a Janjaweed militia soldier and were preparing to turn him over to the government. Pressed to explain why he attacked the town, the soldier revealed in a low voice that he had been promised $200. “It was mind-boggling,” Miller, 33, recalls. “It lets you know how complex the situation is. It isn’t just one people against another; it’s murkier than that. People are starving, and so they do things that hurt their own people.”"
