The Pirate Queen
Word of Mouth Review: "From the creators of Les Miserables and the producers of Riverdance, this new musical tells the real-life saga of legendary Irish chieftan Grace O'Malley and combines classic musical theater storytelling and the traditions of Irish dance and song, to create a romantic and sweeping Broadway event. With a cast more than 40 and a big-budget production, The Pirate Queen is Broadway on its grandest scale. But did our trio of real theatergoers think it sails? Watch and find out!"

Saw this show over spring break. The music is pretty good, except for the use of the harpsichord to inform the audience that "We're in England now!" and then back to the Irish step-dancing music. The lyrics were fine, the set was beautiful, along with the costumes and lighting. The acting was wonderful, and so was the dancing. The plot was somewhat lacking. I don't think any show that tries to span an entire life of a single person is going to be brilliant. It was a decent show. I've definitely seen worse. But I did go see Drowsy Chaperone the next day, which was fantastic, so I'm sure it didn't help my opinion of the Pirate Queen.
This show really sounds like it is tanking. They have been dropping so much into it, and I have yet to hear one good review about it. I guess it proves that spectacle isn't everything a show needs...
