School of Art Lecture Series presents:
Steve Rowell, Center for Land Use Interpretation
Tuesday, April 10, 5pm
McConomy Auditorium, Carnegie Mellon
An artist, photographer, and designer, Steve Rowell will be discussing recent work with the Center for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI) as well as his other solo and collaborative projects. A research organization interested in understanding the nature and extent of human interaction with the earth¹s surface, the work at CLUI integrates the many approaches to land use‹the many perspectives of the landscape‹into a single vision that illustrates the common ground in ³land use² debates. It attempts to emphasize the multiplicity of points of view regarding the utilization of terrestrial and geographic resources, while also stimulating discussion, thought, and general interest in the contemporary landscape. Rowell will also discuss solo work on the Sonic Boom Archive‹an 18 month autonomous monitoring, recording, and dissemination research project focusing on sonic boom events generated primarily by supersonic military testing and training in the airspace above the Mojave desert, north of Los Angeles. Recent 2006 exhibitions include the Whitney Biennial and installations in collaboration with Simparch in Cincinnati and London. Recent publications include photographs and essays in Desert America from ACTAR press, Cabinet Magazine, and Overlook: Exploring the Internal Fringes of America with the CLUI.

The Regina Gouger Miller Gallery Presents Carnegie Mellon School of Art Master of Fine Arts Student Exhibition
Findings, the 2007 Carnegie Mellon University School of Art Masters of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition, will open with a reception from 58 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2007 in the Regina Gouger Miller Gallery on the Carnegie Mellon campus.
John Carson, head of the School of Art, describes the exhibition as one in which you will find six fantastic artists: a quirky creator of a robotic menagerie; a farm girl asking questions of the military; an observer of traumatized adolescence; a mesmeric Icelandic storyteller; an aesthetic manipulator of sound and light; and a computer whiz fighting media overload.
Carson adds, ³They are united by a refusal to take anything at face value.
They will rework it and throw it back and ask us to think again. I have been mightily impressed by these characters since starting as the new head of the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon in August 2007. They have made me laugh, climb, shiver, eat pork, crawl on my belly, lie on my back, hallucinate and brood.²
Featured in this year¹s exhibition are Lauren Frances Adams, Jan Descartes, David W. Halsell, Ian Ingram, Gunnhildur Jonsdottir, and David Tinapple.
The students will give gallery talks about their work as well. On Tuesday, April 17 at noon, Gunnhildur Jonsdottir will speak about her work in the gallery. On Tuesday, April 24 from 5-8 PM, Adams, Descartes, Ingram,
Halsell, and Tinapple will give a public tour of the exhibition. Both
events are free and open to the public.
The Regina Gouger Miller Gallery is located on the Carnegie Mellon campus.
Hours of operation are 11:30 a.m.5 p.m. TuesdaySunday. Visitor parking is available in the East Campus Parking Garage, located on Forbes Avenue just east of the Morewood Avenue intersection.

Filmmakers Galleries, 477 Melwood
Reception Friday, April 27, 7-9 pm.
"Street" by adjunct professor of art, Robert Beckman Digital mural installation.
April 27 - June 10, 2007.
Beckman was born in Charleston, WV. He attended Cleveland State University and received his MFA in 1985 from Kent State University, both in Ohio. From 1990-1995, he taught printmaking at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and is currently teaching at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. Beckman is also the director and co-founder, with Ian Short, of Artists Image Resource (AIR) in Pittsburgh, an artists' organization which integrates fine art printmaking with education programs that explore the creative process, founded in 1995.
These street images, filtered and carved into digital approximations, bespeak an alienating yet seductive, environment where visual abundance and saturation attempt to simulate significance and meaning.
The images exist as files. They become ambiguous referents to non existent original objects. The marks become the images and the images become the marks in an odd relationship between the thing, the thing represented, and the heavily mediated simulation of each.

The Andy Warhol Museum presents Gift of Gretchen Berg: The True Story of ³My True Story,² and The Troublemakers present two aspects of the work of New York photographer and journalist, Gretchen Berg, and will be on view from April 21 through August 5, 2007.
The True Story of ³My True Story² documents Berg¹s interview with Andy Warhol in 1966, which was published under the title ³Andy Warhol, My True Story.² This interview is widely regarded as Warhol¹s best, filled with many of his famous and perceptive quotes. The exhibition reveals for the first time that these words aren¹t Warhol¹s, but rather those of Berg, who carefully edited the conversation to make it appear as though she was eliminating her own voice. The exhibition showcases Berg¹s photographs, original recordings, a vintage photocopy of the typescript, and five publication sources of the interview. The majority of these objects were recently acquired by The Andy Warhol Museum, some of which were gifts from the artist.
Troublemakers presents Berg¹s portrait photographs of children and teenagers protesting in New York between 1967-1975. These images portray the diverse emotions of protesters, some of whom appear to be idealists while others are simply having fun. Protests against racism and the Vietnam War became common in April 1968, at which time students began to march not only for these causes, but also in opposition to high school curricula and dress codes. Supplementing these photographs are vintage armbands, American flags, journalism reporting on the Vietnam War, and other related ephemera.
Troublemakers introduces a new perspective on protest, for the children and teenagers portrayed in Berg¹s photos are neither aggressive nor demonized, but calm and resolute. They act upon their beliefs in a non-violent manner, expressing awareness of and disdain for racism and the Vietnam War.
Utilizing a Nikon F2 and Rolleiflex, Berg captures the emotion of the crowd:
excitement, tranquility, awe, laughter, fear, anger, and sorrow. A girl splatters red makeup on her face to simulate blood, and throws herself in front of a group of students. A young boy is photographed at a candlelight vigil, wearing a button that reads, ³Give Peace a Chance,² and students carry signs calling for people not to pay the taxes that go to continue the War.
