Basic PTM - Organizational Charts

IWasntInClass (2:14:29 PM): hola eProf
IWasntInClass (2:16:41 PM): i hear there is confusion involving the organizational chart assignment
IWasntInClass (2:17:04 PM): which concerns me since i started it and wasn't confused or didn't realize i should be
eProf (2:44:43 PM): oh?
IWasntInClass (2:45:05 PM): yeah
IWasntInClass (2:45:11 PM): i think just with the formatting
IWasntInClass (2:45:30 PM): you just want us to take the chart given in class and put in excel or something right?
IWasntInClass (2:45:44 PM): and then do another one for how we work here
IWasntInClass (2:45:45 PM): ?
eProf (2:45:45 PM): you have to do two charts
IWasntInClass (2:45:56 PM): right
eProf (2:45:59 PM): one that pretty much replicates what we did on the board
eProf (2:46:21 PM): the organization of the "prototypical regional" production department
eProf (2:46:29 PM): and the second
eProf (2:46:56 PM): that shows all the people and relationships necessary to do a production
eProf (2:47:32 PM): mostly limited to the production side
eProf (2:47:38 PM): rather than the producing side
eProf (2:47:52 PM): so you don't need the finance office
eProf (2:47:55 PM): or development
eProf (2:48:09 PM): but you do need all the people who have the ideas or execute the ideas
IWasntInClass (2:49:10 PM): did you give us that information in class?
eProf (2:50:05 PM): the nature of the assignment or all the people in the show?
IWasntInClass (2:51:21 PM): um, any information beyond the production side of the people involved
eProf (2:51:42 PM): no, I figured you'd been involved with a show before
eProf (2:52:02 PM): we talked a little bit about it when people brought up job titles that weren't on the chart we were doing
eProf (2:52:10 PM): and we talked about the idea at the end
eProf (2:52:21 PM): how the people there could stand on their own without a show
eProf (2:52:29 PM): but needed other people for the ideas to do a show
IWasntInClass (2:52:33 PM): ah
IWasntInClass (2:52:46 PM): do we need to include those on the chart?
eProf (2:53:18 PM): How the group actually relates to each other (who gets their instructions & information from whom) when producing a show (from your observations and experience). There will likely be titles on this chart that are not on the other.
IWasntInClass (2:53:21 PM): (i wasn't in class, so i'm just clarifying all this info)
eProf (2:53:55 PM): The second chart may very quickly begin to look like a furball. Be sure at least to include production department heads and the creative team. Crews, staff, & advisors are added at your discretion.
IWasntInClass (2:53:59 PM): so, we need to include the idea people on the second chart?
IWasntInClass (2:54:05 PM): yes?
eProf (2:55:12 PM): that appears to be what it says
IWasntInClass (2:55:13 PM): and not the first...?
eProf (2:55:44 PM): How a typical Regional theatre production staff is structured (from the class presentation).
eProf (2:56:19 PM): this is all pretty clear on the assignment sheet
IWasntInClass (2:58:02 PM): okay, well i had other people telling me (when i was asking originally since i missed the class presentation) that the second one was supposed to be like, how it works here...
IWasntInClass (2:58:24 PM): and then when i read the assignment sheet...it seemed contradictory
eProf (2:58:44 PM): you can use your experience here to help inform the content of the second chart
IWasntInClass (2:59:24 PM): okay
IWasntInClass (3:00:36 PM): so, for the sake of process, would it be reasonable to print out two copies of the first chart and then draw lots of crazy lines connecting everyone on the second one and then go back and attempt to reformat it to fit?
eProf (3:01:01 PM): I think that will be restrictive
eProf (3:01:06 PM): but its one way
IWasntInClass (3:01:18 PM): what would you recommend?
eProf (3:01:32 PM): you could start with your chart #1 and then add in people and lines and then see what you need to do to format it
eProf (3:01:40 PM): I guess that works
IWasntInClass (3:01:42 PM): okay that's what i meant
eProf (3:01:55 PM): I think I might start with nothing
eProf (3:02:04 PM): and add people by what they do
eProf (3:02:15 PM): but maybe this is just a case of "you have to start someplace"
IWasntInClass (3:02:19 PM): okay
IWasntInClass (3:05:47 PM): so you are expecting most people's second charts to resemble how it works here?
eProf (3:07:37 PM): that's not the priority
IWasntInClass (3:08:03 PM): right, but it's likely, yes?
IWasntInClass (3:08:14 PM): i'm not saying you're grading on that
eProf (3:08:17 PM): the priority is to see the necessary relationships for doing a play and how they can differ from the hire & fire relationships of the organization of a typical production department
IWasntInClass (3:08:33 PM): k
