New study finds no significant improvement in film inclusion over past decade

ThinkProgress: The numbers are in. The numbers are abysmal. The most appalling findings are detailed helpfully in all-caps, like a presidential missive about how YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES: “NO PROGRESS FOR FEMALES ON SCREEN IN FILM IN OVER A DECADE.”

Oscars SO WHITE and SO MALE hasn't ended yet. The lack of female nominations at the movie award ceremony is not ever surprising, yet still just as disappointing every year. Unfortunately, the female representation we DO see is mostly cishet, white women. I will say seeing those few female faces is something, but the lack of diversity within the “female” category is nevertheless frustrating, being a LGBT+ Woman of Color myself. The category of Director is one that always gets me. There is a very obvious lack of women and People of Color being represented to win Best Director, and it is not like they don’t exist. More often than not, almost every category is strictly white people. The #Oscarssowhite hashtag trended in 2016, but is still very relevant today. Like this article talks about, we are very far from achieving gender equality in the film industry. Women, especially the white women who are sometimes being included, need to start raising their voices. Men as well, need to start fighting for their female co-stars.
