What Disney Can Do With Haunted Mansion Conventions is Incredible

Theme Park University: Something the general public rarely gets to see is how Disney Meetings can create unique events for corporate groups using their spaces for conventions. Last year, we broke a story about Disney offering one-of-a-kind escape rooms with live actors available to convention guests. Now, they are showcasing just what they can do with unique convention after-party events. This one has a Haunted Mansion theme and it’ll knock your socks off.

When I first opened this article, I must admit that I was under the impression that the author was going to talk about the design conventions within haunted houses, and how Disney brilliantly manipulated these norms to create a masterpiece. Apparently, I was quite wrong. The article discusses corporate events in Disney-owned spaces, and how Disney managed to thoroughly blow their clients' expectations out of the water. The haunted mansion theme, in my personal opinion, is played out and generally something of a cliche. While I'm disappointed to see that Disney did not play with the norms of the haunted mansion archetype, I am thoroughly impressed to see how they dialed the theme to eleven in order to host a convention that was truly special, or should I say paranormal? The lengths that Disney went to with their technical elements, including, but certainly not limited to, the costuming of cast members, the scenic elements, and even the media design with projections all over the place, are truly impressive and build a very cohesive atmosphere for the convention.

This is an interesting concept. I think Disney could make a lot of money (not that they need more money) on booking parties and conferences. There are a lot of people who are obsessed with Disney. I have a friend that takes a two hour drive up to Disney two to three times a week because she loves it so much. People like here would be willing to book parties at Disney so they could experience a whole new side of the park. I also think that this world be a really cool thing for big conferences. Even adults love Disneyland, the magic of it all is captivating even after you have left Neverland and had to grow up, so to see the park and its experiences in a new and interactive light would be cool for large conferences in LA willing to drop a pretty penny. This would also get Disney to employ more actors.

Like Al, I was expecting much more of a design perspective on Disney’s process in creating something like the Haunted Mansion. That being said, I still found this article quite fascinating. I guess that when you have the technical capabilities and funding to the scale that Disney does, this is within your scope to accomplish. Disney has such a gift for bringing magic to any concept that it is presented with in a way that reaches the child-like spirit of everyone who comes near their creations. Their attention to detail is impeccable, and, almost even more impressive, is their ability to transform the spaces their given, using different technology and scenic elements to fully immerse their audience. They are a group that truly embodies the magic of live theatre. Walking into one of their parks leaves you breathless because, not only is the world you’ve entered into more than just a façade, it is a fully interactive show that you are a part of. From opening to closing, no part of the charade falls; everything is perfectly choreographed and timed.
