At AES: Theatrical Sound Design Meets Reality

Prosound Network: Many of the problems and solutions in live sound are universal, applicable in one way or another to any variety of situations, from concert sound to house of worship installations to sporting venues. With that in mind, the annual AES Convention had plenty of live sound-centric offerings to take in and enjoy, from an on-stage interview with Dave Natale, go-to FOH engineer for The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Lenny Kravitz, Fleetwood Mac and dozens more, to Audio for Corporate Presentations, to Miking for PA and more.

This was definitely one of the best sessions that I attended at AES this year, and not just because my former boss, Chris Evans was moderating! Everyone on this panel was 1-a seasoned veteran in their field, 2-very encouraging to those aspiring to enter the field of live sound, willing to share stories, experiences, advice, etc, 3-very articulate and informative, and 4-clearly very happy to be in this industry and doing what they were doing! There is a lot of complaining to be expected in theatre, and often people can let their personalities get in the way of things, but these panelists helped remind me why I find theatre exciting, because after 20+ years in the industry, each of them still felt that way! Very educational.
