DC Theater Arts: Mary Zimmerman — a playwright, opera and theater director, and performance studies educator — is a true original in contemporary theater. Her best-known work is Metamorphoses, which won her a Tony Award for Best Direction; and let us not forget she is a bloody “Genius,” awarded by the MacArthur Foundation.

I would love to go see this production, Mary’s work is something that I have spent much time hearing and learning about. My undergraduate department head, professor, and lighting designer, T.J. Gerckens, worked with Mary Zimmerman when he was the lighting designer for Metamorphoses as well as Candide, and in his lighting classes he would always reference to working with her, and the types of descriptions that she would give him in terms of what she wanted to see on stage. T.J. would also use pictures from these productions as examples when discussing various design effects, and the thought behind them. I’ve always found their work to be incredible. Interestingly enough, T.J. is also the lighting designer for this production of The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci at the Shakespeare Theatre; I recall him telling out class about it not all that long ago. This is definitely one production that I would love to experience in-person.
