Michael R. Jackson and Jacolby Satterwhite on Making Art in a Shifting Culture

The New York Times: Although the playwright Michael R. Jackson, 41, and the visual artist Jacolby Satterwhite, 36, work in different genres, they have some things in common. Both are queer Black New York-based artists who address trauma, secrets and stigmas. And both have spent most of their careers feeling overlooked and misunderstood. “As the Black gay man in the room,” said Satterwhite, “I was seen as some sort of weird exception and dismissed.”

I really enjoyed reading this article and learning about the work that these two artists are putting forth. It's interesting to see the parallels and connections that can be drawn from comparing and contrasting two different artists in similar situations. For example, it's remarkable that Satterwhite was able to see a part of himself reflected in Jackson's musical, even though he was skeptical at first. Similarly, they both felt somewhat the same on the topic of solitude and relationships. I think that this article does a good job of giving us insight into what queer people of color face in their lives that may (or may not!) be different from our own experiences, and I'm sure that Jackson's musical is no less powerful itself. These two artists are doing great work, and in my opinion their work is needed now more than ever, ever since 2020. I look forward to hearing about Jackson's next play.
