The story behind Andy Warhol’s transformation into a zombie by Pittsburgh’s renowned makeup artist Tom Savini
Features | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: When people think of Pittsburgh, two things often come to mind: Andy Warhol, born and raised in the Steel City before leaving for New York City after graduating from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University); and zombies, because of the Night of the Living Dead movies, filmed just outside of the city and adopted by Pittsburghers as their own.

I just gotta start by saying that when I think of Pittsburgh, the first two things that come to mind are not "Andy Warhol and zombies". Andy Warhol, maybe, but not zombies. I never knew about these popular films prior to reading this article, and I am very interested to watch them now. Special effect makeup always amazes me because of the illusions they create and the way simple marks work together to imply a cut, injury, or a dystopian creature. Andy Warhol was a visionary artist whose pieces stretched beyond making art to simply make art. His pieces fueled social commentary, and I think that his calling upon a renowned Hollywood makeup artist to do his zombie transformation is not out-of-character. I say this because of his impulse to comment on Hollywood and the film industry, along with the idolizing tendencies of society. Savini did a brilliant job with his makeup, and I find it almost amusing that throughout the whole process, Andy sat there in silence.
Wow that is so crazy because I’ve never seen that picture of Andy Warhol as a zombie. I also didn’t not know that the Night of the Living Dead movies were filmed right outside of Pittsburgh. World renowned make up artist Tom Savini became famous after he worked on the second movie in The Night of the Living Dead series Dawn of the Dead. After Savini worked on the third Living Dead film Savini was contacted to do Andy Warhol’s zombie makeup. So he and Greg Nicotero traveled to New York. I thought it was very interesting that Savini said that Andy was very polite and patient about getting his makeup done. The only thing he said is that when he reached to move Andy’s hair out of the way, Andy pushed his hand away because the hair was a fake headpiece. It’s so cool to hear about this especially around Halloween and it’s so surreal that we go to the same school that Andy Warhol went to.
