Mixing Peter Frampton’s Final Tour

ProSoundNetwork.com: A mainstay of rock radio since the 1970s, Peter Frampton recently concluded his performance career with an arena-packing last run, dubbed Peter Frampton Finale - The Farewell Tour. Along for the ride to mix house nightly was FOH engineer, Jim Yakabuski, who oversaw a SSL Live L550 desk at each stop.

I always find it so interesting to read about a front-of-house mixer’s workflow for a live concert on such a large scale. When it comes to mixing, the desks used can be absolutely massive, but once it is set up to the engineer’s liking, it becomes fairly simple to use. They key point is that the engineer sets it up the way they like it and the way they feel is most efficient. When set up how they like it, the board becomes very easy to navigate, and after some practice, becomes second nature. I know when I use a board that has been set up by someone else, it takes me time to get used to the layout of all the input and output channels and the various effects returns, and the logic behind the specific arrangement usually confuses me. When I get to set up and program all the channels according to my logic, I find the board overall much easier to use. This article did a really nice job of explaining how the front-of-house mixer arranged the desk for this farewell tour, and it was really interesting to hear his insight into how he arranged the channels as he did.
