Formlabs Form 3 SLA 3D Printer Review!

Tested: We spend two months testing the new Form 3 printer from Formlabs, which uses a new type of low force SLA resin printing for improved print quality and low impact print supports. Sean reviews the Form 3 and explains how the new laser module works, its caveats, print speeds, and how the new system compares with the Form 2 and other SLA printers!

I’ve been a big fan of three-dimensional printing since the technology was first released. In the short time frame that they have been available to the public, the technology has rapidly improved. I am already fairly well acquainted with FDM printing, or the plastic filament printing which melts rolls of colored plastic filament and extrudes it through a nozzle in layers to build up your print. I know a little bit about powder bed and inkjet printing, in which a mechanism reminiscent of an inkjet printer deposits a binding agent upon thin layers of powder. However, I have, on a couple occasions, seen videos of a 3D printer that seemingly pulls the print out of a shallow pool of liquid, and the technology behind it has eluded me. Finally, this review has answered many questions for me. A laser cures photosensitive resin, layer by layer, on the base of this plate, as it rises out of the vat. The videos I have seen of this technology have been time lapses, which make the prints appear to only take a couple of seconds, whereas in reality, these prints take upwards of eight to twenty hours. Stereolithography, or SLA 3D printing, is such a wild and radical concept for my small mind to process, but after watching this video review by Tested, I want one more than ever. The small problem is the $4,000-$10,000 price tag.
