Oh wow! The Video Music Awards! Glad they made it onto the green page. The lineup for this year was pretty packed. And the images that accompanied this article are pretty amazing. It’s really wild to think that entertainment design firm Visual Noise Creative LLC deployed TEN disguise gx 2 media servers to facilitate the entirety of this extremely video intensive environment. Viacom really seems to be pushing the limit on what a television production can be. They do have the money for it after all. Disguise seems to be a really flexible program for this environment design firm. They talk about how it's easy to work at a fast pace, and it's easy to handle the curve balls that are just inevitable when putting on a production of this scale. I also find it super interesting how media begins to replace scenic design. The media becomes an encompassing force within the space and it doesn’t overcrowd in a bulky way, it just compliments the need for space.

I don’t think I have very watched the VMAs… I've heard about them but I never watched the show which I probably should have seen by now. There are so many opportunities for designers outside of theater and opera and it makes me hopeful for the future, haha. It's kinda cool to think about entertainment like this because it is both live and broadcasted. The design has to look good in person and on-screen! The set, pretty much a stage of LED screens, was defiantly the right feel for an event like this which is many about celebrating media. I must say, with the number of lighting effects, LED screens, and then any lighting needed to see the performers must be a pain to film. The different amounts of light in all different areas of the event space must be hard to balance (I have no knowledge of this process though).

I have always been curious as to what it would be like to design for a major show or event such as the VMA’s. I always watch these major award events and am blown away by the sheer scale fo everything. The 2019 VMA’s were certainly no exception. Though I did not get an opportunity to watch the event live myself, the article did a good job at describing what I missed. As seems to be increasingly common nowadays, almost every surface of the set was either a screen or could be projected upon. This scale of media surface is a tall order for any media server or client. So, the natural response, of course, is to use ten whole disguise gx 2 media servers. I don’t know much about the world of media servers, but in the brief research that I have done after learning about Carrie Underwood’s tour, disguise doesn’t mess around with their products. The fact that these ten servers will be able to smoothly handle multiple layers of 8K footage at once… that is simply astounding. I cant even begin to imagine what it would be like to even attempt to program something like that, but someday I hope I can learn more about designing for major live event productions as such.
