DC's Director of Nightlife and Culture Reflects on First Year

On Tap Magazine: To embark on any new endeavor – creative, personal or professional – can be a daunting hill to climb for anyone, and DC government is no exception. Even with the support of Mayor Muriel Bowser and others, Shawn Townsend, who became the first-ever director of the Mayor’s Office of Nightlife and Culture (MONC) early this year, has a lot on his plate.

This is a very interesting position and I am actually surprised that this position didn’t exist already under the department of tourism. It was really good to read about this position is more about just making sure that there are solid nightlife and culture but making sure that it is accessible. It was great seeing this in action as it looks like Shawn Townsend is helping local venues and minority supporting organizations. These are all great examples of how the position is all about accessibility. I was interesting to read about how he felt his past work would influence and how he seemed a little worried about the reputation of his old job proceeding him. It really seems like a very cool job where there is a lot of voices to juggle. There are so many big problems that Townsend has to juggle, such as safety, accessibility, and economic growth. Overall, it was great reading about an arts management government job that in school we hear little about.
