My highschool did Millie in the year before I got there and they were also highly criticised for the racist choice of show. Not to the point of protesters in the streets but they often found themselves in the papers, not only the suburban one for my town but the boston globe as well. There was a lot of talk throughout the show about how produce the show in a respectful way, but that's just it. What these protests are saying is that there is no way to do racist right. If schools want to continue producing Millie there needs to be a rewrite to create a new Millie that doesn’t allow for untrue stereotypes to prevail. Until then the show should be struck from the high school repertoire. As sad as it seems to be losing a comedic show with some amazing music, the systemating perpetuation of racist images and steryotypes is oh so much worse.
