Predicting the Next Big Names in Costume Design for 25 Years

Theatre Development Fund – TDF: Where do you look to find the next big name in theatrical costume design? For the past quarter century, the winners of the Young Master Award at the annual TDF/Irene Sharaff Awards have been a great predictor. Named for legendary costume designer Irene Sharaff, the event celebrates its 25th edition on Friday, April 26 at the Edison Ballroom. While the two big honorees are industry veterans -- Tony-winning costume designer Susan Hilferty and two-time Tony-winning scenic designer John Lee Beatty -- Young Master recipient Mio Guberinic is still an up-and-comer. Judging from his predecessors, he won't have to wait too long for his time to arrive.

I had never heard of the Young Masters winners list before, and it honestly kind of sounds like a “Forbes 30 under 30” type list, but for the theatre industry. That being said, it seems like a huge honor to be put on the list, and a good resource for people in the industry to use, to know who to hire. With that in mind, I NEED to find a way to make it on this list one day. I’m not saying it’s an integral step needed in order to become a successful costume designer in the industry, but it definitely seems like it would help… A LOT. We, as theatre artists, need all of the help we can get to keep our careers going in a positive, uphill direction, so lists and awards like this are incredibly helpful to the people trying so hard to make it. It’s a wonderful feeling to be recognized by your peers because while being recognized from people outside the industry is very flattering, being recognized by people going through the same trials and tribulations as you is very, very meaningful in many different ways.
