Weekend Watch: Epic Haunted House Builds from “Scary Lady Videos”

makezine.com: Terra is one scary lady. The creator behind Scary Lady Videos has been posting videos of her haunted house projects for years and has accumulated an extremely long playlist of spooky project tutorials. These video aren’t just informative, but fun to watch. You can tell from the way Terra talks about her craft, just how much pleasure she takes in it. Definitely contagious!

I loved these videos, I definitely will be watching more. Each one has so many cool techniques that could be pulled and used elsewhere. I love how you could hear the passion in her voice. It was funny to see her shirt in part of the video. She seems like a nice lady you'd bump into in the grocery store, you'd never guess she spent her free time making wonderfully appalling halloween decorations. I've never seen such amazing rendition of gravel out of foam, not to mention how simple the steps were. After watching the two videos it felt like pink foam was her go to medium.

These videos are really cool. I am not usually one for do it yourself projects, particularly while I have been in school due to the time commitment involved, but these videos make it seem manageable to do some really great home decorating for the holidays (not just Halloween even though the videos are Halloween-specific). I also am interested in the videos because some of her techniques, including the pink foam molding, painting multiple layers to generate a specific effect, and repurposing existing decorations are trhings that we do all the time in theatre. These could be good videos to watch if you are trying to learn some introductory techniques in scene decoration and by scene, I do not mean theatrical scenes exclusively. In this case, I mean scene for a party, event, etc. The only thing that might prevent someone from actually creating somebody of the ideas in her tutorials is the advanced tools needed. I would not buy a lot of tools to create home decorations.

My physics teacher in high school was really into Halloween, and he told me about this one time he was home alone and had his garage door open as he was creating a coffin in his garage late at night. Nothing creepy about that at all. Great guy. This lady gets pretty creative with simple or sometimes complicated ways to create these kinds of props yourself. If you’ve got the time, what better way to spend it than by getting creative. With the different ideas she has in her videos makes it look fairly cost effective. Then again some people don’t have some of the tools in their everyday house, so some ingenuity will need to be involved to get some of the props built. Depending on what it is you are trying to make, it is Halloween so it doesn’t take much to make a prop look effective, but to make it look good takes a little more effort.
