I think this article uses some negative connotations around the idea of "open source" software. The author(s) describe it as "just a copyright hack" and I think this plays on only a small element of the overarching goals of open source projects. There is, for instance, countless projects that remain open source because it has countless benefits, including: The ability for anyone, anywhere, to make contributions to such software. Additionally, if the goal of the software is, for example, a community project, it allows for easier distribution of the software as well as easier means of supporting users of the software. One software I can think of that embodies both of these principals is PhpBB, the PHP powered bulletin board (forum) that is entirely open source and maintains a strong following. I feel as though before the authors can begin to comment on open source hardware, they should perhaps consider revising the lens they are utilizing to critique such software.
