Space engineers needed: Nat Geo documents our mission to 'Mars'
www.controldesign.com: National Geographic Channel (NGC) is launching a new TV series, “Mars,” in November. The six-part miniseries brings together some of the best minds in modern science and innovation, illuminating how research and development are creating the space technology that will enable our first attempt at a mission to Mars. And it is leading the way, along with Elon Musk at SpaceX, in making engineering fun again for generations to come.

I think mars is really cool, the planet, the future colonization, and the TV show now too I guess. Space exploration has seriously fallen by the wayside over the last 30 years and it’s incredibly disappointing to me. There are all sorts of reasons why it is incredibly important that humans become a sustainable multi-planetary species and Mars is the first step in that goal. I really hope the TV show takes a different tack from the typical scifi, “aliens, aliens everywhere”. Mars is an important goal and life there can be dramatic enough without added aliens. Just the idea of launching massive interplanetary spaceships into orbit and riding them down to mars is awesome to me. I think this TV show has a lot of potential materiel to pull from as it documents the future of the dangerous lives we will live on mars but also the incredible adventures and innovations we can bring to earth and our species by doing it.
It is amazing how much influence younger generations get from watching tv and looking at social media. When I was younger it was Iron Man, now, of course, the idea of having a flying suit is a little far fetched but even the events that occur during the film allow the viewer to learn a lot. This idea of making a miniseries that will give the impression that being an engineer is fun is a genius concept and is a brilliant use of resources. I am surprised that some of the best and brightest in the engineering field are leading the charge on this. I get this impression that many people in this generation don't understand the importance of younger generations involvement, after all, it will be them that are running the world some day. I must say that I have very high expectations for this miniseries and look forward to seeing how these space engineers perform as producers.
Have spacesuit. Will travel. More like have MS in mechanical engineering. Will travel. Space is absolutely the next big thing, not just because its cool, but because it must be. Aaron Sorkin said it well in the west wing, that space is an imperative, its not just necessary, its in our nature, its what next, its what’s over the horizon, the next hill, we must go. I would say, who cares if its profitable or not we have to do it, but then I remember that most people that care will require that it be profitable. More and more Elon Musk is sounding like a space magnate from a science fiction novel. He may not be the most revolutionary engineer or scientist, but he will be able to accomplish whatever he sets out to do with some lateral thinking. Hey, we don’t have enough money to send people to mars, lets make better internet and sell it to everyone so we can send people to mars. I’m so glad im alive right now.
