I saw the Rosco booth at LDI this year and it was pretty cool. Maybe it was me, but I did not feel like I was prepared to go to LDI. My understanding before attending the conference was that it was a bunch of lighting people showing off their cool tools and toys. It was exactly that, but it all completely went over my head. Like, I know that I am not a lighting person, but I barely understood what exactly was being showcased on the exhibit floor. All the “new” lights looked like all of the old lights with new features. However, I am curious to know how the layout of the exhibit floor is determined. It would have been really nice if all similar booths were next to each other. Like there would be one place to see everything about gels or gobos or tape. That would have been really nice.
I guess I was expecting a table full of different colored gels. I did not know that Rosco made so many other products. It is clear that they are trying to break out into the lighting world more and with a name as well recognized as Rosco, I do not think it will be too difficult for them. I don’t see them specifically targeting theater but it appears as though their lighting instruments will be a big hit in the general lighting industry. They appear to have really great technology and I wonder if Rosco will soon be widely known for more than just gels. I guess I do not know how long they have been making a lot of products outside of lighting, but I do not think it has been that long so they still have room to grow but from my fairly layman’s perspective they look like they know what they are doing.
The Rosco booth looked pretty cool for LDI, obviously with conferences like that, you are always checking out what is new, showing off the technology and innovations that are coming up within the company. I think something like this is why I’m excited to attend USITT. It will be my first conference, but also being there with other artists who have the same intrigue I do. Being able to walk around the different booths, interact with possible potential employers, and learn from those who do it best. I don’t know much about lighting, but I know it can bring about some cool effects, and the fact that now they have wireless controls for some of their electrics is pretty cool. There is no need to sit behind a board while you try to figure out what you want. You can operate from any angle to get the effect desired to match your needs.
Quality LED tape! Look at that. Rosco might have a winner. The rep didn't discuss how the diodes were binned, but I'm assuming Rosco does pretty good QA for their lighting fixtures. Rosco started getting into the business of manufacturing actual lighting equipment only a few years ago, and it's good to see them expanding their product line. They know they can't compete with someone like ETC, so their products seem to be focused at filling niches that designers need filled. For example, their cubes and panels are used a lot as practicals (emulating a laptop screen's light on stage for example). While I haven't used any Rosco fixtures yet, I'm excited by all the development that Rosco is putting into this line of products. I'm interested to see where they take it from here. Maybe Rosco will eventually decide to make a profile style fixture, which would be quite a product if it could compete with ETC.
I loved the Rosco brand in general. They have been a industry standard for years. For my entire career, they have been the name you to to when you needed expendables for your show. From Gel to Gobo’s, and from gobo rotators to moving mirror heads. They have always been on the leading edge of the consumer needs. These new products of coming out this year is just another example of what they do best. Finding the needs that you might not think about at first but when you need something a little diffrent from the norm they always have what you need. I personally don’t know if i would have a need for the items coming out but I’m sure this is big news for someone in film or on a budget. Rosco will always be a good resource to have around.
