Temporary Structures and Ballast: A Crash Course
Kyle Moyer, P.E. | LinkedIn: I despise ballast. As an engineer, I hate designing with ballast—not because the design is difficult, but because I know how clients feel about it. When temporary structures need to be secured, it’s the weapon of choice for most productions. It’s cheap to rent and leaves no traces once it’s gone. But that’s where the benefits end. It’s difficult to move, typically requires a forklift, and ends up being three times heavier than anyone expected.
