New Worlds of Design

www.osfashland.org: For Artistic Director Bill Rauch, having seven female scenic designers here this year—Rachel Hauck and Sibyl Wickersheimer are returning to OSF for Roe and Richard II, respectively—was “no accident,” he said. “Female designers are vastly underrepresented in our field, and we want to continue to expand opportunities for the extraordinary women working in the American theatre today in all design disciplines at OSF.”

I enjoyed that this article acknowledged the importance and lack of female scenic designers in theater today, without necessarily dwelling on it. Instead of focusing on the fact that these scenic designers are women, this article focused on these women as artists. Another key observation made by this article is how, as more and more female designers enter this sphere, they are forming a network that is rapidly becoming vital to future female scenic designers entering the field of theater.

Hearing how these artists adapted to the wide range of obstacles and specifications designing for OSF demands was simultaneously interesting and enlightening. For example, in dealing with the lack of water in The River Bride, Mariana Sanchez's exploration of symbolic water elements to incorporate into her design was fascinating. Overall, the descriptions of the varying forms collaborations can take, and how different visions can mesh together to create a cohesive whole, were very informative and exciting to read about.
