The New York Times: The Music Box Theater on Broadway has been packing in the crowds for weeks, with theatergoers eager to see a starry but unfamiliar musical, “Shuffle Along,” even as that jazz-and-tap show is still being revised in previews.
But now comes the moment of judgment: Is it any good?
And another very important question: Is it new?

After reading this article I decided to look more into what classification Shuffle Along got, and it turns out they are being listed as a new musical. I have to say that I definitely agree with this decision, as this new production of Shuffle Along and the original one are almost completely different. The only similarities seem to be the songs used within the show, as even the title itself has been expanded. This style of show reminds me of Crazy for You, which pulled songs from old musicals but was a completely different plot, so therefore it was classified as a new musical. If Crazy for You was classified in this way then Shuffle Along should be too. It really seems like the only reason they were advocating for the label of revival was to avoid facing off with Hamilton, which at this point has been almost guaranteed the best musical win. This is unfortunate for the team at Shuffle Along, but the reality is that you can't change your category to try and give yourself a better shot at winning a Tony Award.
