Benedum fire causes no problems for Pittsburgh Opera's upcoming premiere

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Just days before Pittsburgh Opera's premiere of David Hockney's designed production of Stravinsky’s "The Rake's Progress," a battery in a prop pocket watch caused a small fire that required Pittsburgh firefighters to extinguish.

Fire is no stranger to theaters, but this one seems out there. I’m glad that there was no real damage and no one was hurt, but it does beg the question as to what caused the fire. I’ve heard of a lot of things causing fires in theaters, but a pocketwatch? My guess is that there was some sort of short with the battery that caused enough of a spark to catch the bedding on fire. Everyone is especially careful when live flame is used on stage. People are designated to be in charge of it, to watch it, to carry fire extinguishers. But that’s all when there is planned fire on stage and we know it. I suppose, theoretically, this pocket watch could have been a personal item and not a prop. I wonder what news would be spread about the fire in that case. It does raise the question of safeguarding against fires from small electronics.
