Tony Award-Winning Composer, Stephen Flaherty

The Producer's Perspective: If you want your kid to write for the musical theater, and write well, you might want to start by naming him Stephen.

Stephen Sondheim, Stephen Schwartz and this week’s guest, the other half of the Ahrens/Flaherty songwriting team, Tony Award-Winning Composer Stephen Flaherty, are proof that there’s something in this first name that helps you write killer show tunes.

Stephen Flaherty is one of my favorite composers, and I could not be more excited that CMU will producing Ragtime in the coming year! I am also excited for his new show Anastasia (one of my favorite movies)!!!
What I enjoy most about his work is that his music has a ring to it, and you walk out of the theater humming one of his toons. So much of what is on Broadway today is spectacle, with nothing to hold with you as you leave the theater, besides a t-shirt of mug. Flaherty writes music that really grabs the audience.
It was so exciting having him here last semester. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the juniors perform his music at that cabaret. I also really enjoyed his shout out to his family, as I feel that a strong support system in crucial in the theatre.
I do think it is ironic that three of the most successful composers on Broadway are all named Stephen, yet I do not feel it has had any legitimate effect on any of these men's careers. The name, you can tell, is nothing, compared to the music they all write.
