La Calisto is a raging carnival of love and lust

The Tartan Online: Every so often, we wake from the tedious repetition of our lives and, for whatever reason, remember that we are at a cutting edge, world class institution. Every once in awhile, we become conscious of how proud we are to be Carnegie Mellon students. Well, I definitely had one such moment Saturday night at the School of Music’s production of La Calisto, an opera in two acts written by the Venetian composer Francesco Cavalli.

I almost was the assistant stage manager of La Calisto until I was switched onto Bob & Dave & Ren. Since I was almost on the show I thought I should go see the show to support Ben and see what I could have been involved in if I was not switched onto a different show. I have never seen an opera before and I do not speak Italian at all, so I was a little worried going into the show whether I would understand what was going on. Luckily there were supertitles to read that sort of translated what they were saying. Sometimes I did not read the supertitles because I was watching the action on stage and just listening to them sing. I was a little confused at times, but I just accepted that and enjoyed the experience. I really liked the set even though it was so simple. It felt simple yet complex at the same time because it was like a jungle gym at times especially with the swings. It made the opera seem like it could be in any time period because the scaffolding did not give a definite answer of where we were and when this was, which I liked.
