Carnegie Mellon moves up in university rankings
www.gulf-times.com: Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) ranked 23rd in the best national universities category in US News & World Report’s 2016 list, up two places from last year’s 25th place. Carnegie Mellon also moved up two places from 24th to 22nd in the Times Higher Education world university ranking.

Carnegie Mellon University is definitely a wonderful school, but it is not without its faults. One of my major problems with this school is the elective requirement. I went to art school because I am good at art. Why do I have to waste my time taking classes outside of my major which are honestly harder than my typical classes? I don’t understand why I have to struggle in these classes and just end up getting terrible grades which reduce my scholarships… And yes, I have tried to take classes which I would enjoy but none of them fit into my schedule. So I have just ended up being miserable for one class a day and struggling to find time to work on the homework within an already ridiculous curriculum. Even with how much I complain about this school, I still really enjoy my time here and wouldn’t trade it for anything else.
I am surprised to see that this article does not discuss the drama program – but whatever. I am also surprised to see that we are second in game development and design, as I know many people who wish to go into or are pursuing game design and development who are not at Carnegie Mellon, or did not look at Carnegie Mellon as an option. I can only imagine that this message is kept quiet to keep up the professional and serious aesthetic that CMU fosters in its careers and educational pathways. It is kind of depressing if that’s the case, as Carnegie Mellon is known as a kind of depressing and serious place – even within the campus community and I feel this stigma is carried out by the students. If Carnegie Mellon as an institution could broadcast the more creative side of careers while still upholding their professional stature, the community would be friendly and happier.
I love hearing this stuff because honestly remembering that someone somewhere recognizes the level of effort we are all exerting day in and day out can just make the job a little bit less over bearing. Sometimes since everyone is working so hard it feels like everything you’re doing on has no effect on anything and wouldn’t be missed in the slightest. However, at the same time being surrounded by such hardworking individuals truly is inspiring. You look around and within every major here, every single one there is such a devotion to their work. It is a community of excellence, and you can see that by so many various areas being top ranked. I don’t know why they chose not to discuss The School of Drama, as we surely have our fair share of bragging rights, but none the less it goes to show the standard of Carnegie Mellon as a whole. It is not a school with a really good drama program, or a really good Computer Science Program, or a really good business program, it is a really good school. Period.
I love reading positive things about Carnegie Mellon. Even though I've only been here for a couple months, CMU is such an incredible school in so many fields. In engineering, computer science, or theatre, if you tell anyone that you go to Carnegie Mellon, they are immediately very impressed. It's amazing how CMU has such a strong reputation in fields that are so immensely different. In fact, when I told my uncle that I was planning on attending CMU, he immediately assumed that I was planning to be an engineer. Carnegie Mellon is such a great school was such amazing programs, and I love seeing it get the recognition is deserves.
