Pittsburgh startup thinks outside the box with new 3-D printing system

Pittsburgh Business Times: As far as consumer desktop 3-D printing systems go, Pittsburgh startup BoXZY is aiming to be an overachiever.

In addition to 3-D printing, the system also functions as a CNC milling and laser cutting robot.

"We refer to it as a desktop manufacturing space," said Joel Johnson, who co-created the system with his brother Justin.

I’m trying to figure out the functionality of how this type of machine works. Being able to change its function from 3-D printing to laser cutting to CNC milling, seems like it would be much more difficult than it sounds; but I could be wrong. The size of the machine seems inadequate for the projects you would work on, which I guess leaves more to a consumer size and not so much a large scale quantity type of machine. The issue for me is the accuracy of the different tools. Laser cutting you want it to focus, and I would assume that even though you’ve got it setup, messing with the different mirrors that the laser bounces off of, I would think would throw some irregularities in the project. At this point you’ve almost got yourself a similar system to the portable laser cutter that came out last year, and just like that startup, I would want to wait to see how well the project turns out before thinking about investing in an item like this.
