Step Aside, Fosse: Here Comes the ‘Duck Dynasty’ Musical

Flavorwire: Have you ever been in the midst of watching Duck Dynasty, waiting for the Robertsons to break out into a chorus of “Everything’s Coming up Roses” or “Pick a Little, Talk a Little,” and for some inexplicable reason they don’t? Well, according to the New York Times, the frustration this surely creates will now be quelled with the Vegas-bound The Duck Commander Family Musical.

Wow. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I do agree slightly with the broadway people that there should not be a musical glorifying the homophobic people from this show. Also, I'm not sure how this musical will be received. Recently there have been more and more musicals about very odd things and some have flopped and some have been a huge success. So honestly, as with some other strange musicals, if the creators somehow do it right, this could be a hit. But really the odds are stacked against them for choosing such a non musical subject matter.

The main thing this project has going for it is shock value. And riding the wave of a reputation supported by scandal is always inadvisable. Duck Dynasty is very much restricted to the world of a culture moment; it will have neither longevity nor memorability. Trying to base and create an entire musical for a successful run on such a flash-in-the-pan idea simply does not provide the structure necessary. Furthermore, Duck Dynasty genuinely appeals to a very thin sliver of society; the rest of the world takes it with a rather hefty handful of salt. Society mocks the show and the people on it more than laughs with them. Finally, the homophobic comments that were made will likely be the first thing associated with the name Duck Dynasty for a long time to come. That is not a legacy any successful show is built upon.
