Troupe transfers beloved 'Charlie Brown' TV special to stage | TribLIVE

TribLIVE: With the holidays just about here, what better way to get in the Christmas spirit than to join Charlie Brown and his friends?

Mon River Arts will present “A Charlie Brown Christmas” at the Grand Theatre in Elizabeth Nov. 20 through 23.

Director Lorraine Mszanski said theatergoers should not be disappointed with the show. “The original script is word for word from the TV special.”

When I read this, my brain went "Oh, that sounds cute." Which, in translation, is my brain telling me that this sounds like community theatre. Which it is. But I wasn't mad about it. The people in the article, even those interviewed that are a part of the production, don't make attempts to hide that. They know what they are dealing with, and that is a piece to be performed for a local community. There is a place in the world for community theatre. People like to get together and do things for their local town for pleasure, and that's okay. They'll be making negligible revenue, and they probably aren't getting paid. And that's okay. They've chosen other lives, and this is what they do in their free time. And that's okay. I think that we, as aspiring professionals, at times for get that it's okay to do a thing less well just because you like it.

I wonder why they decided that the show needed to be longer. I do hope that they integrated the added shorts well into the play, as the only people who are likely to go see it are people who were fans of the original, and are therefore less likely to be forgiving of extreme changes to the original. Unless they are filled with the Christmas spirit. I do wonder if they would manage to keep some of the magic from the original with the fact that they are now being played by actual adult humans.
