The Old Soundman: Songs For Testing A System

Pro Sound Web: There’s so much hating going on nowadays! We even see it among over-the-hill yuppie sound guys who have heard songs by a certain band played too many times to check sound systems nationwide.

But I’m not going to pile on the crowd of haters! Not even when I receive notes like this one from Tim. No! The OSM is on the love trip!

Ah, the age old irritation with Sound Engineers. Why are you still playing the same freaking song for every system tuning? Yes, hearing the same tune every day while the sound person is tuning the system gets irritating but you have to remember that they play the same song because they know what to listen to with that song and how to identify possible problems that may arise. Yes it can get annoying but always look at the why before you cast too much judgement. However, I want to caution sound engineers to choose carefully what songs they use to tune and to have a variety of songs that can be used. You don't want to play Rammstein in an environment that it would not be accepted. And be aware of the other crew's opinions on your song choice. Does it hurt you to mix things up? I had to listen to the Star Wars Theme over and over because that's what my sound guy liked to use and as much as I like Star Wars it got old after awhile.

While this article has some valid info, I feel like it splits the world of sound in two. While yes it does give some bands that are good for system testing, it also pokes fun at this younger sound man. I understand the wording of the original note does seem to have some malicious intent, the old sound man seemed to take this too personally and make his article all about getting back at the writer. Despite the occasional information and humor I find the "Old Soundman" articles to be useless. It seems that all he is interested in is poking fun at the younger generations of engineers that have different tactics than his own. Sure there are some tactics that have withstood the ages but there are new methods presenting themselves everyday by young engineers and "Old Soundman" seems to put all of them down. All this being said, I do have to agree with him in his statement of using "Dark Side of the Moon" as test music, it has been on my test playlist for as long as I can remember and I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon.
