Review: Rapid character shifts confuse in CLO Cabaret's 'Murder for Two'

TribLIVE: If you're looking for an evening out that doesn't overwork your brain, “Murder for Two” can be a delightful mystery romp.

The musical-comedy murder-mystery that CLO Cabaret is offering through Jan. 18 leans more toward the wild ride spoofiness of Charles Ludlum's “Irma Vep” than the serious sleuthing of Agatha Christie.

Ugh, while this sounds like a funny, enjoyable performance, the reviewers comment about just "going along for the ride" really frustrates me. It's comments like these that really propagate this culture of passivity that surrounds theatre these days. The point of any performance is to connect, to in some way cross the boundary between reality and that which is play-acted. Encouraging viewers to essentially let the play slip over them in the most superficial way is aggravating. Rather, we should be educated the theatre going population of today to engage in what they see. In turn, we also need to produce shows that can be readily followed.
